November 18, 2010 scouting/hunting
report! I have clients this weekend, so went out by myself this morning.
It doesn't look as good as it did on the 12th, but it looks pretty
good. I was limited out in an hour. 7 shots for 6 ducks down. Scouted
after and there are lots of Gadwall, Pintail and Widgeon around.Click below for season of your choice; 2008/2009 2009/2010 2010/2011 2011/2012 . 2011/2012 Season . September 14 hunting report! First actual teal hunt of the year for me, and even on this one, I had a fishing rod in my hand more than a shotgun. A limit of teal went home with me though, and I caught a good mess of fish. Supposed to get a cold front in. Can't wait! . September 22 hunting report! My last chance to shoot teal this year. I have to guide dove hunters this weekend. I shot another limit of teal and caught another good mess of fish. I guess all the doom and gloom reports of Choke being down so much and the hydrilla all dead kept hunters from calling because I didn't book one trip this teal season, but I shot limits both times I went, AND got a bunch of fish doing it. Ain't nothing doom and gloom about that to me. . November 10 hunting report! First regular duck season hunt of the year due to guiding deer hunters the first 4 days. Had to limp out to the closest hole instead of the preferred hole due to motor not acting right. Shot my limit anyway. . November 12 hunting report! The motor is about right, but still going to fine tune it some more. I and my one hunter shot limits. It was slow, I will admit, but we finished up about 10:30 and I went scouting. Saw quite a few ducks but no big concentrations. I'll look more in a few days. . November 14 hunting report! Boat and motor are ready for the season now, let's hunt! Had the entire portion of the lake to ourselves. There were no other hunters and no fishermen. The weather was a balmy 70 degrees. Those are all bad things. The birds did not fly well at all, but we still shot a good variety of birds; mallard, mottles, pintails, canvasbacks, ringnecks and widgeon. When scouting afterward, we saw over 1000 birds, including a couple of real good looking holes for the next hunt. . November 16 hunting report! WHAT A HUNT! 18 birds on the water in the first hour, then finished up a four man limit and was home about noon. Limited on pintails early, then watched them pass through the dekes, time after time while waiting on other ducks. It was FUN! . November 17 hunting report! The wind switched to the north last night and was blowing hard this morning. That is not normally a good thing for me at Choke, but today was a real decent hunt. The action wasn't hot and heavy, but pretty steady, and my three hunters all took limits. We were packed, stacked, boat put in storage and on the way to an early lunch before 11:00 am. . November 19 hunting report! Tried a spot that I thought might be good on a SSE wind, and boy, was it! Three of us limited on canvasbacks and pintails, then watched can after can go through the dekes while we waited on other ducks. We finished out with a few of this and a few of that, including one beautiful drake mallard. Congrats on that one, Mark! Heading to the house well before lunch - I luv it when my plans actually work! . November 21 hunting report! My hunters showed
up late this morning, without one stitch of camouflage (except they did
have facemasks), and no waders, not even hip boots, and carrying some real
pretty, SHINY guns. Then things went downhill from there. Plan A was not
huntable without waders. Plan B was already taken. Plan C was littered
with shell casings, feathers and fresh boot prints from the day before.
We had to settle with Plan D. Being 77 degrees at daybreak didn't help,
either. Then, the hunters were continually moving instead of "Stay
absolutely rock still", and standing a few feet from or in front of the hiding
tree, instead of "Become one with the backside of that tree". That
caused many birds to bust off before getting in good range. Despite the
chellenges, we still shot our canvasbacks and mottled ducks, plus a few
other ducks, and there was a few misses along the way, too. All in all,
I think I did my job as well as I could under the circumstances.
NOTE: Boys and girls, if you want to maximize your chances of having a limits kind of hunt, read your confirmation letter and follow that pre-hunt advise, then listen carefully to your guide in the field and do exactly what they say. I want you to have a great hunt, but you need to help me. I and my guide partners are not miracle workers. We can't make the ducks blind and stupid to compensate for your lack of preparation and/or cooperation. November 26 hunting report! My deer hunters
got what they wanted yesterday, so I got to sneak in one last hunt this
split with my son-in-law, Jake, today. It was 72 degrees and not a breath
of wind. That usually makes for a pretty slow morning, and it was, but the
ones we got to look at us almost all worked perfectly, and we shot well. We
were limited shortly after 9 am. Canvasbacks, spoonies, bluewings, pintails
and a gorgeous drake mallard! Love them old greenheads! See ya after the split.
Book your hunt NOW for then (210-872-2771). Dates are getting pretty booked
up.
..
December 15, 2011 scouting report. First chance to get out since the split. NOT a good day! Lost my wallet at the boat ramp with all my Christmas shopping money in it, damned few ducks flying, I was shooting pitifully, dog wouldn't work right, and I couldn't find much that looked good for the next couple of hunts. I e-mailed hunters to let them know it didn't look good now, and to ask if they still wanted to try since a cold front was due in on the 16th. Sometimes that helps. December 17, 2011 hunting report. Despite the doom and gloom report I gave him, my one hunter decided to try it anyway. I'm glad he did. It wasn't hot and heavy shooting, but it wasn't bad at all. The ducks that came around worked perfectly and we shot well. We both limited and I had the boat on the trailer by 9:30 in the morning. Thanks Ryan for your patronage and the compliments! December 18, 2011 hunting report. Well, not
so very good today. The spot I scouted out the morning before got hunted
by someone else that afternoon (welcome to public water hunting). That always
changes things, and never for the better. The boot prints, shot shells and
feathers, that weren't there when I scouted, let me know after daybreak that
I'd been buggered. Despite that problem, we still did get ducks in shooting
range 10 times, mostly flocks of 4 to 9 birds, a couple pairs and
a couple singles. That's not a really horrible hunt, but it isn't too good
either.
I'm stuck guiding hog and deer hunters, and getting through the holiday for the next two weeks or so. Good luck to you that try it in the mean time. If you can find any hydrilla, you'll find some ducks. Find hydrilla right next to a good hidey spot and you'll actually get to shoot at some. The hydrilla is getting real thin though. If you don't hear from me before then, Merry Christmas everyone! January 04, 2012 hunting/scouting report. The reports I've gotten the last two weeks from friends about Choke have not been good. They said the hydrilla is GONE, and the ducks must have gone off looking for food somewhere else. Today's hunt confirmed that. My 2 hunters shot just 6 ducks between them, and they only got that many because they could shoot pretty good. Just three ducks got past the spread without staying. I also scouted many miles of shoreline hoping to find something decent looking for my next couple of hunts booked, but nothing, and I do mean nothing, looked very promising. I'll be calling the hunters booked and offering the chance to move the deposits to next season, or try diver duck hunting out on the main part of the lake. There is still a fair number of those hanging around. January 11, 2012 hunting report. Hunting divers on a miniature mud island, out on the main lake, from layout blinds. It was a helluva lot of work dragging all that extra gear out there and mudding up those blinds to blend in, but it worked fairly well. The three of us got our canvasbacks, and one redhead, plus a couple bluebills, one bufflehead, a trio of pinners and a trio of gadwall; 13 ducks total. Also missed more than we should, but the wind switched on me and the birds wouldn't work quite right after that. Had to stretch some shots farther than I like. January 27, 2012 hunting report. Hadn't been duck hunting here for a couple weeks now. Been hammering a private pond near Dilley instead and guiding a lot of pig hunts. It was SLOW at Choke today, but I came away with a limit of ducks in a bit over an hour. That's because I only missed once, and had to shoot one duck a second time, so 8 shells for my 6 birds. Nothing looked better while scouting. Cold front is due in tonight. Hope that makes it better tomorrow. January 28, 2012 hunting report. The cold front did NOT make it better. My client didn't show, but he didn't miss anything. I hunted an hour and a half and never even saw a duck. Talked to a few other hunters and between all of them, they shot one duck; the only one they shot at. I told everyone to hunt early this year because late season would suck with no food or water in the flats for the birds. Sometimes, I hate it when I'm right, especially when hunters don't listen to what the guide tells them. Late season is when you have to hunt if you want good mounter birds, but for numbers, the last part of the first split has almost always been best. Keep that in mind when booking your hunts for next year. 2010/2011 Season . September 11, 2010 hunting report! Teal opener. We shot a few, missed a few, and let a few get through that should have been shot at, but we were too slow. Dang them things are QUICK! Saw a surprising number of big ducks. Blackbellied Whistlers tried to land on the tree against which we were leaning. Others flew close enough we could have shot easily, if in season. Also had Fulvous Whistlers come by, several Mottle Ducks, several Shovelers, even a couple of pintails. Lake looks GREAT for the regular season. The prime dates are filling up fast. Book your hunt now to make sure you can go. . September 14, 2010 hunting report! After teal again. About the same results as opening day on the teal part of the hunt. Not so many other ducks today, but did have a few Shovelers and Mottle Ducks through the decoys. One Mottle sat there quacking for several minutes. One Black Belly came back over and over and over. Saw Wood Ducks and Fulvous Whistlers, but at a distance. . September 16, 2010 hunting report! Teal chasing again. CLEAR morning, so teal flew real early, before we could identify what kind of duck it was over the dekes for sure, so we let four flocks get through without a shot before popping a cap. First flock we knew were teal was about a dozen birds. Everyone shot the same one, then I shot a second one as they left. Next flock was 4, and 3 stayed behind. A single slipped through without a shot, then we busted a 6 pack up. Only 2 left. One more single completed our morning. Whistlers were CLOSE, like maybe 5 yards, a few times. It was cool! 5 Mottle Duck gave us the once over, too, and a flock of wood ducks. Come on October 30, opening day of the regular season. . September 22, 2010 hunting report! My last chance to hunt teal this special season. I am booked up with dove hunts through the remainder. I'm so glad it went well. I saw more teal than I have all season, and several small flocks worked us perfectly. Me and my one hunter both got limits. Other ducks worked us many times as well, and the Blackbelly Whistlers would have gotten hammered, then hammered again, then hammered some more! . October 30, 2010 hunting report! WHAT A ZOO!!!!!! I really hate hunting public water on opening weekend, or most weekends for that matter. The idiots were out in force, shooting at ducks they had absolutely no chance of ever killing they were so high, setting up way too close to other hunters, shooting ducks that weren't in season yet (mottles), and sometimes shooting birds that weren't even ducks. There were a lot of ducks around though. We saw probably over 2000, and managed to get ducks close enough to ethically throw pellets at them on 12 occasions. That's not such a bad duck hunt, considering! . November 04, 2010 hunting report! Not so many hunters today, but not so many ducks, either, maybe 800 or so total! We still had ducks in or right over the decoys an even dozen times though. Another decent hunt! . November 05, 2010 hunting report! O.K. I'm stuck on a dozen. Again this morning we got 12 good shooting opportunities. We saw a bit over 1000 birds total; far, close, high, low, everywhere altogether. The shots we got were really good ones, but I'd like to get more of them. Still, another decent hunt. . November 08, 2010 hunting report! I guess I shouldn't have ever complained about having ducks in or over the decoys a dozen times. Those seemed like great hunts compared to this morning. We saw MAYBE 150 ducks total, but at least they were fairly willing to work. I called the shot 7 different times, and they were all real good opportunities. First ducks in were 16 Blackbelly Whistlers, straight through the middle of the dekes, 20 yards high. No called shots were over 35 yards out. . November 12, 2010 hunting report! Finally, a really good shoot! It started out real slow hunting, and scary foggy, but the birds flew better as the morning wore on and the fog lifted. I wound up getting to yell, "Bust them ducks!" 26 different times. It was several nice flocks of ducks, too, not just singles or pairs. That's FUN! . . November 20, 2010 hunting report! The client had major gun problems, getting the gun to go bang only once in awhile when he would pull the trigger. I and my Guide Helper got our limits. The client shot a couple. . November 21, 2010 hunting report! The clients didn't show up this morning. I waited at the ramp until way late for them, then still had a couple hunters move in and set up just downwind of me right at legal light. I moved and didn't get set up until about 35 minutes later. I was still limited out in an hour, but it wasn't because I was covered up in ducks. I shot at just two flocks and two singles to get my six. I hope it gets more consistent in the second split. I have deer hunters until then, but am kinda tired of this up and down stuff anyway. . November 22-28: Deer guiding and hunting, and holiday, then the split when ducks aren't open. Be back at it on December 11. . December 11, 2010; The clients didn't show AGAIN! They missed out on a pretty good morning. I had ducks in or right over the decoys 16 times in an hour and a half. I was limited out in about 30 minutes, but stuck around to play a bit. Went scouting for awhile after that and found another potentially good shoot for tomorrow. . December 12, 2010; Yep, a REALLY good shoot! Ducks in the decoys 34 times in just under 2 hours. . December 17, 2010: just got back from guiding hog hunters so went out duck hunting this morning sorta blind, having not scouted or hunted ducks in 5 days. It wasn't stellar, but it wasn't bad. Got ducks to work right to the dekes 13 times. Had a couple other shooting ops that were borderline, but we let them pass, waiting on cupped up drakes. All in all, a decent morning. . December 19, 2010: another no show. That's getting a bit more than just frustrating. They missed out big time. I put ducks in the dekes 20 times, then went scouting and found a couple of real good looking set ups for the next few hunts. . December 21, 2010; limits again. It's not been awesome hunting this year, but it's not been horrible. I've only had 2 pretty slow days, a bunch of decent days, and more good to really good days than slow ones. Can't complain! . December 31, 2010; 3 hunters shot 3 limits and we were heading back to the dock by 8:30 a.m. That's a good hunt in my books! . January 06, 2011; Good start for the new year. Ducks in the dekes 18 times in an hour and a half. 3 limits down and getting home early. Gotta love it! . January 07, 2011; what a morning! Ducks in the decoys 41 times in about 90 minutes. Fun, Fun, FUN! Limits of canvasbacks and pintails, and finished out with ringneck and shovelers; all drakes. . January 08, 2011; I knew it couldn't last forever, but I did not expect to go from the best hunt of the year to the worst on back to back days. Wind switched to due North at about 20-25 MPH and the ducks hunkered down. They did not fly and 4 of us shot at ducks just 6 times for the morning. Bumped up over 2000 on the way out to the ramp, so they are still around. They just would NOT fly! . January 15, 2011; Guided hog hunters for several days so had to go out unscouted this morning. First set up was no good, but a quick scout trip showed me the spot I wanted and we moved. An hour and a bit later, we were all limited out! . January 16, 2011; BIG wind switch overnight, but I knew a spot that had been pretty good in this new wind earlier in the year, so we started out there, and ended there. It was a good hunt. Ducks in or over my dekes over 20 times. Limits of canvasbacks and pintails plus a few other ducks went home with us. . January 17, 2011; Sometimes I HATE hunting public water. Plan A, B and C were all taken when we got there, and then fishermen pulled in just downwind of us over and over when we set up at plan D. Needless to say, we didn't get much duck shooting done. . January 22, 2011; NOT a good way to end the season. Changed spots 3 times but each time the ducks we found would leave and then not come back. Still managed to get 6 good shooting opportunities, but couldn't make good on those shots. Just 4 ducks found their way to the strap. . All in all, it was a pretty decent season. I hunted here 18 days in regular duck season, and had a total of 34 other hunters with me. We shot a total of 237 ducks. That's an average of 4.6 ducks per person per morning. Variety was real good. We got 16 different species. I wonder what next year will be like??????????? 2009/2010 Season . August 20, 2009 scouting report! The lake level is dropping pretty fast due to the drought, but we've had some great hunts on Choke in drought years. The lack of water in all the small ponds around the area forces the birds to the big lake and right in front of our guns. BOOK YOUR HUNT NOW! . September 12, 2009 hunting report! Opening day of teal. It thundered and rained, and my clients didn't show but it quit raining just about legal shooting light and I went out by myself. A limit came quickly after I moved 100 yards from my original set up. . September 15, 2009 hunting report! I don't know where all the teal went, but they aren't here right now. . September 23, 2009 hunting report! I shot my limit, but it's a good thing I didn't miss. Not many teal around. The lake keeps dropping. . October 21, 2009 scouting report! Thank You Lord! The lake actually came up a little due to the recent rains. It has helped a lot, flooding back into some sedges that are dropping seeds good. Add to that, the cool fronts that have come in already and guess what; WE GOT DUCKS! Now, don't get me wrong. It's not like there are thousands of them or anything, but I guarantee I'd have shot my limit this morning. It looks like early season will be pretty good. October 24 to November 24. The best hunt of the year has been a paltry 11 ducks for 4 guys and they were decent shots, too. That was the first week. The rest of the hunts have been really poor. I was skunked for the first time in over 4 years here, and that has happened twice. Water is back down to over 9 feet below conservation level and falling daily, leaving the duck food high and dry and the hunters with no cover in which they can hide. Very little duck food, very few ducks, simple as that. Nowhere to hide, can't kill the few that are there. I will not book any more hunts for this season at this location. . January 16, 2010 hunting report. With all the recent rain, decided to try it one more weekend. Unfortunately, the lake only came up about 4 inches. Between all my friends there were 22 hunter days on the lake this weekend. A total of 4 ducks shot. YUCK! THAT SUCKED! . August 28, 2008 scouting report! The 2008-09 season is holding a lot of promise this year. The lake level has stayed pretty full despite the 10 month drought that south Texas went through. As of August 28, it is less than 3 feet from FULL, and it's raining there as I write this report. There is duck food EVERYWHERE. The hydrilla has made mats sometimes a quarter mile out from shore. The shore itself is lined with sedges and smartweeds, both favorites of ducks. Wherever the hydrilla isn't quite so thick, there is plenty of pondweeds and arrowhead. I saw several teal already, and there were a lot of resident ducks around as well; blackbelly whistlers, woodies and mottle ducks. Get your dates reserved now. I got a feeling it's going to be a season for the record books! . September 16, 2008 teal hunting report! Talk about starting out with a bang! Every hunter in every group we had out shot their limit and did it in short order. Several flocks of 40 to as many as 80 birds were seen. Smaller flocks were in sight almost constantly. In a word, WOW! September 19, 2008 teal hunting report! Well, it really slowed down from the opener. It took me and my one hunter a whole 40 minutes to knock down a limit yesterday. If this had been my first hunt of the year, I'd be really excited. It was a GREAT HUNT! It just wasn't like the opener. September 22, 2008 teal hunting report! O.K., it really did slow down now, but I still can NOT call it a bad hunt. I had a total of 4 hunters and myself shooting and we knocked down a full limit. Because of lost birds in THICK cover though, we hit the boat ramp two birds shy. Fog seemed to keep the birds down for a long time. At 8:00 a.m., we had ZERO birds and only two shots fired. At 9:00 a.m., we were up to a whopping three birds in hand and about a dozen empty hulls, yippee! Then the fog lifted. We were shot out at 11:00 a.m., but again, we couldn't find two birds. Teal were still trickling in as we were leaving. . November 01, 2008 duck hunting report! WOW! I'll assume that because the small ponds all around here are bone dry, the ducks have really come to the lake. There are 1000's! Every hunter in every one of the groups we had out shot a limit and did it in short order. . November 06, 2008 duck hunting report! This whole week has been great! Some days have been slower than others, like Monday was nothing compared to Saturday, but every hunter that has gone out with us has gotten their limit; even the guys that shot like sh..! . November 15, 2008 duck hunting report! I personally haven't been out in the last week (guiding deer hunts instead), but the duck guides with whom I work have all had good to very good reports. Today, there were not as many birds as there had been, but I limited out in about 15 minutes, despite the lowered numbers and some dingleberry setting up just downwind of us only minutes before legal and refusing to move. My clients didn't limit because they also refused to move, but they got close to a limit, and considering the problems that we had, that's not a bad morning. . November 20, 2008 duck hunting report! The best duck hunt I have ever had!!! I was limited in just 4 minutes. You read that right; one, two, three, four minutes! I used 3 shots to finally drop the first bird, then 2 on the next one, then one, one, one and was done! A shoveler drake, then pintail drake, a gadwall drake and hen on a double, then a drake greenwing teal to finish. Since I had no hunters until the next day, I just stayed out there with a camera until about 10 a.m. I lost track of how many times I put birds into or right over the decoys at around 50 times, but it was over 60 times total. One word; AWESOME! . November 25, 2008 duck hunting report! Since the 20th, things have steadily gone downhill. The good thing is, it is still way better than most places ever dream of being. I had 4 clients out with me today and we all limited out by 10 a.m. I'm sort of glad the split is about here though. The birds need a rest, and so do I. See you when it opens back up on December 13. . December 20, 2008 duck hunting report! I had a great hunt on the 19th by myself, doing some scouting for today's hunt. I only shot at the fully plumaged drakes and still shot my limit in under an hour. Today was also a shooting fest for sure. I had three clients go through more than 7 boxes of shells to get their limit at 9:35 a.m. We got a good variety of ducks, too, including: pintail, canvasback, bluewing, greenwing and cinnamon teal, shovelers, ringnecks and scaup. Several birds were of mounting quality.
December 23, 2008 duck hunting report! You know you are spoiled when a limit shoot with several hunters seems like a slow day because it took until 10:40 a.m. to get it done, but get it done we did. Ducks were in or right over the decoys about 40 times. Now that's fun; I don't care who you are! .
. January 26, 2009. Well, it's all over for another year. I was afraid that my unbroken streak of limit hunts was not going to hold up, but I got down to the last few days before it fell apart. Wednesday, I shot a limit of all drakes and all different species, then went scouting for the upcoming three days. Thursday started out slow but a move put us right in a couple thousand birds and limits came pretty quick after that, except for the last bird, which took about an hour to get. Friday, in the same spot we limited out the day before, 4 gunners shot just 4 birds, and they didn't really miss all that much. The birds had just disappeared. I scouted all afternoon and found very few birds. My hopes for Saturday were pretty low, but, Saturday yielded a real good amount of shooting; just not that much hitting. Still, 17 of the allowed 20 birds found their way to the bag. All in all, just a couple days in the whole season without sending people home with a limit; that ain't bad! Book your hunt for next year NOW! I had to turn away over a dozen groups this year because we were already booked up on the days that they wanted. Don't let that happen to you! |

. 2009/2010 Season . August 20, 2009. This area hasn't suffered from the drought nearly as much as has south Texas. The lakes are still pretty full, the ponds are still pretty full, and the wetlands even has some water in it, along with TONS of duck food. With any luck at all, this will be a real good year! . October 21, 2009. The wetlands are FULL! Teal season went quite well. Duck food is all over the wetlands and ducks are coming in almost daily with the passing fronts. It should be an awesome year, especially the early season. BOOK YOUR HUNT NOW! . October 24, 25, 2009. Youth season opening weekend. Good hunts! Had ducks in the decoys over a dozen times day one, and 10 times day two. . October 31, 2009. Regular season is on, and I mean ON! Limits came fast and easy this morning. . November 12, 2009. The shooting is slowing down a little, but still pretty darned decent. Those folks that shoot well, take home limits. Those that shoot poorly, don't, but the opportunity for limits has been there for everyone so far. . November 23, 2009. It figures, the mallards, which everyone seems to want, start showing up in good numbers just in time for the split, when we can't hunt ducks. Over half our ducks today were big old fat greenheads. There has been good numbers of ducks all season so far, but not many mallards. I hope they stay through the split and build even more. . December 12, 2009. It starts again, YEAH! Good hunts today. Every group out got plenty of shooting. Not all hit so many birds, but the birds were there. . December 20, 2009. The big fronts we hoped would bring us more birds has done just the opposite. We have lost about half the ones we had. If you don't mind shooting divers on the soil con lakes, then we can still have a great time, but the puddle ducks are pretty much out of the area for now. . December 28, 2009. They're BACK! Not in huge numbers, but good enough to wet most waterfowler's appetite. Allen and crew hunted a small flooded hole in the woods and took 6 mallards, 4 woodies and a ringneck. What a ringer was doing in the woods, I've no clue, but he didn't leave. Several other good shots were taken, but not made. It's hard to shoot well with 5 layers of clothes on, but it's still fun to be shooting. . January 01, 2010. A new year, a new batch of ducks. The COLD weather has brought in new birds. Since they didn't know exactly what's what around here yet, they decoyed pretty easy. It was a fun day after a couple of frustrating ones. Hope the improvement hangs on. . January 08, 2010. COLD! TOO COLD! Birds are not flying despite decent numbers being in the area. Late morning it picks up, just about the time to leave. . January 13, 2010. Better weather, better hunting. Geese are finally showing up in huntable numbers, as well as a pretty good number of greenheads. If we had some hitters in the blinds instead of shooters, there would be some big old piles of birds on the ground. As it was, the stringers were decently heavy the last few days. . January 16 to 18, 2010. First goose hunt of the year put almost 30 birds down. That's not bad at all, and considering that nearly 200 shells went pop, I'm going to call it a successful hunt. Two good duck shoots. Most shots were called when the birds were feet down, backflapping a foot or two over the decoys. Plenty of shells shot. . . September 20, 2008 teal hunting report! This area is usually very good to excellent for regular duck season, but not known as a consistent teal area. This year, however, the teal have really been hanging around. Every hunter on every trip to the Soil Conservation Lake has shot their limit. Enough said about that! . September 23, 2008 teal report and scouting report. Guides only hunting this morning. It took about 20 minutes to shoot limits. Nothing wrong with that! Head guide went by the wetlands to check things out. DUCK FOOD EVERYWHERE! It needs water bad though. Please pray for rain. . October 06, 2008 scouting report. FINALLY GOT SOME GOOD RAIN! The soil cons. lakes were looking pretty decent before this rain, but now they are looking prime! The wetland project also caught a bit of water and there is so much food there that it is bound to draw a bunch of ducks when the big push gets to the area. It could use quite a bit more water though, so keep on praying for precipitation guys. . November 03, 2008 duck hunting report. The water is leaving the wetlands fast, but the soil con lakes still look real good. Full limits for everybody on the guided hunts these first three days. . November 10, 2008 duck hunting report. Full limits for everyone except one guy on the guided hunts during this last week. He could not hit much, as in I think he would have missed the lake had he shot at it on purpose. Said it was just not his day; he usually is a pretty good shot. Gee, I've never heard that one before, ha, ha! . November 17, 2008 duck hunting report. A little slower this week, but not bad at all. Everyone got to shoot at more than a limit of ducks, including quite a few greenheads starting to show now, but not everyone knocked down a limit of ducks. . November 22, 2008 duck hunting report. Only one group out on a guided hunt this week, and a one man guide hunt. Limits all around on those few hunts, but good shooting skills paid off. There was just enough shot opportunities to get it done. . December 15, 2008 duck hunting report. Really slowing down now. The ducks have about all the food eaten up, and the lake levels keep falling because of no rain. Still, a fair number of hunts have gone well, while the days in-between have been the pits. Smaller hunting groups have done best while hunting small mallard holes. . January 27, 2009. All done for another year. As is the usual case, early season was fair to good. Middle season was absolutely great. End season was mostly slow, with scattered good hunts in the mix. Don't wait until January next year. . . October 06, 2008 scouting report. It's looking MUCH better than it did right after the hurricane. We might get a decent duck and goose year out of this yet. Keep checking back! . November 23, 2008 report. I still have not personally gone on a hunt to this area this year, but I hear that it's not been bad at all. If Choke Canyon Lake runs out of ducks later, or someone just insists on going to this area, like on a duck and goose combo hunt, I'll go, but I can't see traveling that far from my home on Northside San Antonio unless I have to. . . |

. . November 23, 2008 report. I just got back from this ranch and the duck hunting is looking pretty good. I shot a double banded drake mallard/mottle duck hybrid. One pond had nearly 200 birds sitting on it when I was scouting for deer. Mostly it was gadwall and widgeon, with some mallards, mottle duck, quite a few teal, some ringnecks, and one canvasback drake mixed in. Unfortunately, the lodge is full of hog, deer and exotic hunters until after the duck season is done UNLESS you can go December 18-19-20. There is room for one duck hunting party on those dates only. .
