.
Potentially GREAT!
.
This 400 acre ranch is
just a couple miles south of San Antonio, Texas, so it's super convenient
to local motels and restaurants, and it can offer you a potentially great
hunt. It is on gently rolling sandhills, covered in open oak and hickory
forest, along with some nice open areas, small thickets, and several small
water holes. You might see deer, possibly even a really awesome buck (A 186
B&C buck was taken in '08 season, and I had a 175 B&C or better buck
in front of me the second day of '09 season, but couldn't see him in the
scope through the fog), or you may see turkey, or hogs, or a variety of
predators and varmints, including; coyote, feral dogs (many yotes and dogs),
fox, bobcat (fox and cats rare), ringtail, skunk or raccoons (way too many
coons). The squirrels can drive you crazy in a good nut year. OR, you might
see nothing. Although the game population is quite good, as evidenced by
the amount of sign you'll find, the game is not easy to hunt. I am very,
Very, VERY experienced, yet I get frustrated here on occasion. BUT, when
it all falls together, you can go home with some critters at a very reasonable
price, and potentially, a really great critter. No where in Texas, and I
do mean NO WHERE, will you be able to hunt where bucks like the one pictured
below left actually do live, for this price. And, no where will you find
a fully guided turkey hunt at this rate. SO, if you want a chance for a trophy
class buck or gobbler, at a price that won't break the bank, this is the
place to go.

On another 99 acres, just
up the road a mile and owned by the same people, we have a 5 acre duck pond
(when we get rain), and a dove field. These hunts can also be GREAT or
a bust. The good thing is; I usually know a few days to weeks ahead of the
hunt if it's likely to be good or bad, and I will let you know if it's not
looking too good. We can then change dates, locations, or even change hunt
types. Unlike a lot of other outfitters, I won't put you on a hunt knowing
it's going to turn out badly, sometimes it does anyway, that's hunting, but
I won't do it on purpose.
.
On the great days at the
duck pond; Three hunters shot limits of ducks in 15 minutes. Four hunters
shot 150 shells in about two hours but didn't hit a limit of birds. I got
my limit on every single hunt of 2008. Over 100 Blackbellied Whistling Ducks
showed up numerous days, which are hard to find in the U.S. outside of Texas.
Over 100 gadwall, widgeon, teal and pintail roosted there most nights, and
a few times it was more like 200 to 250 ducks.
.
On the great days dove
hunting: I shot my 12 bird limit in under a half hour from first shot to
last on 6 hunting days straight. One old dude shot 100 shells in the morning
and then another 100 in the afternoon one day. He still didn't get his limit
of dead doves, but he sure got his limit of shooting at them. Seeing 20 to
100 flocks of doves, with 20 to 100 whitewing dove in each flock, plus a
few dozen mourning doves in pairs and small flocks, in a single morning,
is not unusual.
.
"Limbhanger", 11-1/4 beard, 1-1/2 spur |
Limits of dove on day one for Scott and crew. |
Big trophy tom bird for Guy |
And this is what this potentially
great hunting will cost you.
